Merseyside
Merseyside PTE was formed in 1969 from the former municipal fleets of
Birkenhead, Liverpool and Wallasey. In 1974, these were joined by St. Helens and
Southport. Post deregulation, the bus operation traded as Merseybus before
becoming MTL (Merseyside Transport Holdings Ltd). MTL enjoyed considerable
success, acquiring two rail franchises and the London Northern company. However,
mounting debt forced the sale of MTL's Merseyside operations to Arriva in 2000.
