Following deregulation, the post NBC-Map Analysis Maidstone Area Bus Services network was divided between Maidstone Borough Transport (trading as Boro'line) and Maidstone & District. Although prior to 1981, Maidstone Borough Transport's services were almost entirely within the town boundary, the MAP changes had left M&D without a depot in Maidstone. Maidstone Borough Transport retained rural services traditionally operated by Maidstone & District to the south of the town, an arrangement which remained until M&D's decision to introduce competitive services in the late 1980's (which resulted in the eventual sale of Boro'line to Maidstone & District).
Boro'line also enjoyed some success in London tendering.
Note: although Boro'line publicity divided services into either rural or town services, most rural services performed as town services within the Maidstone boundary and were included in summary timetables for principal town routes.
